Lessons are available on Lesson Horses or on your own horse.  Lesson horses range from Quarter Horses, Arabians, Appaloosas, Thoroughbreds and others.  All lesson horses are very safe and are ex-show horses that know and understand their job.

These horses have taught innumerable youth and adults the joys of horsemanship. Ages from 7 to 70 have been trained at Sundance Farm through the lesson program. We have something to offer for all levels of equestrians from beginner to advanced.

Lesson Horses for all Ages

Lesson Level System

Beginners learn to groom, lead, pick feet, tack up, mounting, dismounting, stop, turn, circle, back, walking, trotting and various other basic skills, riders will acquire knowledge such as learning parts of the saddle, bridle, and horse.

Intermediate rider skills include trotting without stirrups, cantering, learning leads and diagonals, low jumps, lunging, and various knowledge skills such as types of hay, saddle pad styles, pasture fencing, show attire, grain types, and more.

Advanced riders jump full jump courses of 3' or more, execute patterns, turns on forehand, side passing, smooth transitions, emergency dismounts, and can ride a lower level dressage test well.

Top level riders learn how to feel diagonals and leads, can ride both stock seat and hunt seat, can sit extended trots and have had exposure to skills such as sheath cleaning, putting together a first aid kit, understanding uses of blankets and horse boots, and various horse health issues such as colic and founder.

Sundance uses a lesson level system which helps to fill in gaps on physical as well as educational skills even when coming from other farms or build a solid equestrian as they grow through our program. This helps us to make well rounded equestrians.

Additional Opportunities

Sundance Farm hosts a student show for those interested in the lesson program in November of each year.

In winter, sometimes we offer “horse school” over Christmas break and Easter break. These are 5 hour sessions that cover various topics or opportunities for those interested and in our lesson program.

Watch the bulletin board for notification of these or other “field trips” or opportunities that are available throughout the year.
